Air Liquid main supplier for Cargill new $90 million biodiesel in Kansas

Cargill to build 200 000 m3/year (60 MMgy) biodiesel plant in Wichita, Kansas

Cargill has announced plans to build a 200 000 m3/year (60 MMgy) biodiesel plant in Wichita, Kansas. The facility is expected to cost $90 million and open in early 2019. Construction will begin this December. Air Liquide Engineering & Construction will build the plant.

The announcement to build a new biodiesel plant in Wichita, Kansas, comes just a month after the U.S. Department of Commerce imposed stiff preliminary duties on biodiesel imports from Argentina.

Air Liquide Engineering & Construction has signed an agreement with Cargill for engineering and supply of the new plant. The agreement is another step in the long-term partnership between the two companies. Air Liquide Engineering & Construction has already built six biodiesel plants for Cargill worldwide.

“We are delighted to sign a new agreement with our long-standing customer, Cargill,” said Domenico D’Elia, vice president and chairman of Air Liquide Engineering & Construction.

“At Cargill, we’re prepared to handle demand for biofuels while balancing it against the need to nourish a growing global population,” said Warren Feather, oilseed managing director for Cargill’s agricultural supply chain business.

Opening the facility in Wichita will strengthen Cargill’s biodiesel operations in the heart of the Midwest where it already has biodiesel plants in Iowa Falls, Iowa, and Kansas City, Missouri. Unlike other traders of biodiesel, Cargill is an integrated producer managing the entire supply chain from origination to production to delivery.

Construction of the new 42,000 square foot facility begins December 2017. Located at 1401 N. Mosley, Wichita, Kansas, it will employ approximately 35 full-time employees.

The plant will be located next to its oilseed processing plant and replaces an existing oil refinery managed by Cargill’s Global Edible Oil business.

Cargill offers biofuels from a variety of renewable resources, including corn, soybeans, sugar cane, palm oil, and biogas. It produces ethanol and biodiesel in the U.S. and the EU, ethanol in Brazil, and biodiesel in Argentina.
